Heavy rain is falling in the valleys of western Nevada.
The snowfall produced chain-only controls on both Interstate-80
and U-S 50 -- the two main roads connecting northern Nevada and
Chains or snow tires were required on all other mountain
highways. California 89 was closed around Bliss State Park.
A winter storm warning is posted for the Sierra, including the
Lake Tahoe Basin, where two to four feet of snow could fall in the
next 24 hours, depending on the elevation.
Winds of 45 miles an hour gusting to 100 mph over the ridges
will create blizzard conditions.
Officials at the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District didn't
even wait for the storm. They took one look at the forecast and
called off classes for today.
