A tour bus taking people from Lake Tahoe to Reno-Tahoe International Airport reportedly lost its brakes coming down a mountain highway, striking a pickup and tractor trailer on U.S. 395 in Carson City.
Authorities say the driver of the pickup, identified as a 68-year-old man from Minden, was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with possible serious injuries.
Twenty-one people were on the Amador Stage Lines bus when the
accident occurred shortly before noon at the intersection with US 50 West that leads to Spooner Summit.
Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen says the bus driver, 48-year-old John L. Cook of South Lake Tahoe, reported that his brakes failed coming down the steep grade.
The divided highway from South Lake Tahoe has several runway truck ramps, but Allen says the driver was beyond the last one when he noticed his brakes weren't working.
Allen says nine passengers on the bus claimed injuries, but all were treated at the scene.
Traffic is backed up as officers conduct their investigation, and drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible.
