Death of police recruit who fired on officers ruled suicide

DATELINE (AP) -A Las Vegas police recruit who engaged in a
gunbattle with officers in February died from a self-inflicted
gunshot wound.
That's the ruling of the Clark County coroner's office.
Police say Ivan Alonzo was throwing Molotov cocktails and waving
a pistol when he was observed by paramedics in an area east of the
Mandalay Bay casino.
The 29-year-old was confronted by two bicycle patrol officers --
who fired and struck Alonzo.
According to police, Alonzo then retreated, fired again and fell
to the ground.
The recruit had left a message with his sergeant the morning of
the incident saying he was resigning.
He was one day shy of completing a two-week pre-academy course that gives recruits an idea of what to expect during the academy.
