Sparks Turns Down Purchase of Golf Course

Sparks is not getting into the business of birdies and bogeys for the time being.

After spending $25,000 in consultant fees, the City Council decided Monday that the cost of refurbishing the aging Wildcreek Golf Course was just too high. It's estimated at as much as $4 million.

Councilman John Mayer said the city would be better off investing in a new 18-hole golf course proposed near the Kiley Ranch subdivision in east Sparks.

Mayer and Councilman Mike Carrigan voted against the measure, with Councilmen Geno Martini Ron Schmitt favoring it. Councilman Phil Salerno and Mayor Tony Armstrong were absent.

The tie vote killed the proposal.
