A man who drowned when his car plunged into a pond at a Sparks golf course has been identified as 25-year-old Guillermo Mendez.
Sparks police say the man called his parents from a cell phone just after midnight, saying he swerved to avoid hitting a dog when the accident happened near his parents' home.
He said his vehicle was in the water and he couldn't get out.
Relatives at the accident scene near the 7th hole of the golf course and called 911.
Divers from the Washoe County Hasty Team pulled the man's body from the car, which was submerged in about 15 feet of water.
He was take to Renown Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
