A man suspected in a series of convience store robberies is behind bars tonight after carjacking a woman at gunpoint - leading police on a chase across town - and getting shot.
Police say 22-year-old Jesus Breceda was involved in at least five robberies in the last month. And this morning they believe he broke into a home in southwest Reno and robbed an elderly woman.
Yet, he didn't stop there.
Just minutes after police say Breceda committed that robbery, they say he carjacked a woman at gunpoint near Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church.
Police started chasing him shortly after and they forced Breceda to a stop near Washoe Medical Center . . . but officers say he tried to escape.
"The officers tried to ram and push the suspect vehicle over, and in that process the suspect tried to back up and run over the officers," says Deputy Chief Jim Weston.
That's when one officer opened fire - shooting at Breceda several times with a shotgun.
He was hit in the shoulder, but was able to drive away.
As Breceda drove on, officers say he was involved in a number of accidents. They say Breceda eventually wrecked the car in north Reno and took off on foot . . . before he broke into an apartment near Wedekind Road.
A woman was inside.
"That's where the officers eventually cornered him and captured him," Weston says. According to witnesses, he was armed but officers do not believe he fired any shots.
Breceda was taken to Washoe Medical Center, but hewas released and is in custody.
Now investigators are trying to piece together the series of events. Weston says: "We have a string of accidents across the city involving the suspect that we're trying to put together right now."
Breceda will likely be slapped with a laundry list of charges that could include armed robbery, home invasion, battery with a deadly weapon and eluding a police officer.
As for the officer involved in the shooting . . . he's on administrative leave tonight pending the investigation.
