"Do you believe it, less than 100 days, look at this horse. He is incredible."
That is the runinng commentary you hear from a friend of Saunya Bolton's as she videotapes Saunya and her horse Il Divo the day they all arrived at the historic Stockyards in Ft. Worth Texas.
It appears as if the mustang has done this his whole life, but just two months ago, he was slipping and sliding, and bolting on his first walk down a nearly empty street in Lemmon Valley.
His new found confidence will have to follow him into the show ring as Saunya tries to impress the judges with her mustang's body conditioning, and his abilities as Saunya leads him through a course. The in hand competition makes up 50-percent of her score to make it to the finals.
"Just depends upon how they interpret our relationship and what I have done with him," says Saunya.
Saunya places 6th on the first day of competiton. She wakes up on Saturday morning and knows she has to ride a series of obstacles and basic maneuvers to impress the judges.
" I'm happy he did what I asked him to do," says Saunya just after finishing the course.
The wait for results takes hours, and Il Divo is starting to fatigue. Standing in a stall at the Will Roger's Memorial Center for days, this is all new to him just as it is with all the other mustangs here. But they all remain calm. Its their trainers who react, by hooting, hollering, and high fiving once the ten finalists are announced.
" Uh, didn't make it," says Saunya as the final name is reveiled.
Her number 70- is not called. Its disappointing, but her focus now must quickly turn to Il Divo's adoption tomorrow.
But there may be another exciting surprise on the horizon.
Billionaire T-Boone-Pickens asks to see Il Divo as a possible mascot for Southern Methodist University or SMU
Saunya talks to Pickens and his wife about her horse. He is gentle and kind and willing to do anything she tells them. Which if you think about it Saunya says, that's the ulitimate achievement of this competition.
"Anyone that buys him can ride him and get him a good home. And we've all reached our goal," says Saunya
Did the mustang from Reno win the Texas oilman's heart?
You'll find out in our next report.
