A fast-moving storm pushed into Nevada on Monday, bringing heavy snow to the Sierra range and northeastern portions of the state.

The National Weather Service posted a winter storm warning for the Lake Tahoe area through Monday afternoon. Forecasters predicted more than 18 inches of snow at the higher elevations.

Chains were mandatory Monday on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit between Reno and Sacramento, Calif., as well as on U.S. 50 over Echo Summit.

Chains or snow tires also were required on the Mount Rose Highway, California Highway 88, Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County and most other highways around the Lake Tahoe area.

In the Reno-Carson City area, the storm came as intermittent rain showers. But forecasters predicted rain would change to snow by nightfall, when temperatures drop snow levels to the valley floors of western Nevada.

Heavy snow warnings were also issued for much of central and northeastern Nevada, including Humboldt, Lander, Eureka, White Pine and Elko counties, as well as northern portions of Nye County.

Travel restrictions were posted for most mountainous roadways in those areas.
