Another winter storm has dropped up to two feet of snow in the Sierra Sunday, snarling mountain traffic but getting skiers and snowboarders stoked after a dry start to the season.
Chains are mandatory on all three highways linking Sacramento and the Lake Tahoe area: Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, US Highway 50 over Echo Summit and Highway 88 over Carson Pass.
In the Reno area, a section of I-80 was shut down at the California line due to zero visibility and a stretch of US Highway 395 in the Washoe Valley was closed due to slick roadways and numerous accidents. The roads re-opened about 11pm Sunday.
As of early Sunday, the storm had dropped 22 inches of snow at Kingvale just west of Donner Summit.
Whiteout conditions and high winds caused the Alpine Meadows ski
resort just north of Lake Tahoe to shut down and the Boreal resort atop Donner Summit to postpone skiing.
