FALLON, NV - An employee of the Churchill County School District has been arrested for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender. Fallon Police arrested Elie Curtis, a janitor for the district, on Thursday.

Officials say Churchill County High School and Northside Elementary are at least two schools where a convicted sex offender worked. And now parents are asking--how can someone convicted for trying to rape a 12-year-old work at local schools?

Mr. Curtis was previously convicted of attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in Clark County in 1975. He served 10 years in the Nevada State Prison.

Investigators started looking into Curtis's background when they received a report that he had behaved strangely around children. The specifics behind that "strange behavior" are not yet being released.

One local parent of three asked why a background check had not been conducted on Curtis's past. Craig Mingay, Deputy District Attorney for Churchill County, says he does not know whether or not the two schools did a background check on Elie Curtis, but if they did it is possible there was an error in the system.

"If there was a background check and it didn't show up, that's possible given the lack of records in '75."

The school district would not give any information surrounding the details of this arrest or of Curtis himself. Instead, they released a statement that the district takes the safety of students very seriously and it will not discuss a specific issue regarding an employee.

Curtis reportedly worked in the district for more than ten years. KOLO 8 News Now is told that in light of Thursday's arrest, Elie Curtis is on leave.

While some parents are questioning whether the school district did a background check on Curtis, others say that the community should not be quick to judge before more information is released.

Kimmer Popoff, a mother and resident of Fallon, says, "it's also unfair to judge someone that yes they have something that happened in their past and they're going forward...they're going to be judged perhaps cause they grabbed a child's hand and said no you cant touch that and that could be considered inappropriate touching."

The Churchill County District Attorney’s Office and the Fallon Police Department have an ongoing investigation regarding Curtis’ behavior in his capacity as a custodian at the school district.
