Douglas Teen Charged In Burning Of Classmate

A Douglas County teenager has been arrested in connection with the burning of a classmate.

Sheriff's Sgt. Tom Mezzetta said an investigation into the Jan. 15 incident determined the 14-year-old boy may have caused the fire that burned Ky Nielsen.

Nielsen, who is also 14, suffered second- and third-degree burns over 12 to 15 percent of his body. He was listed in stable condition at Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento, where he underwent skin graft surgery.

The teen who was charged has not been identified. He was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of reckless endangerment causing substantial bodily harm, Mezzetta said.

Investigators said the boys were siphoning gas from a 55-gallon drum on a ranch in south Douglas County when Nielsen apparently spilled some on himself.

Authorities have not said how he was ignited.
