A surprise storm brought heavy snow Tuesday to portions of western Nevada, creating slick driving conditions for early morning commuters.
The brunt of the isolated, pre-dawn snowstorm hit south of Reno, dumping up to 6 inches of snow in the Minden-Gardnerville area.
A snow advisory was in effect for the region until 9 a.m., and the National Weather Service said isolated snow showers could linger throughout the day.
Chains or snow tires were required early Tuesday on some roads in the Lake Tahoe area, including U.S. 50 over Donner Summit.
Interstate 80 from Reno to Sacramento was open with no controls.
The Nevada Department of Transportation said all major Nevada roadways were open with no controls, but motorists were urged to use caution.
