A Lemmon Valley horse trainer is a little more than a week away from showing her stuff in Ft. Worth, Texas. Saunya Bolton has had nearly 100 days to train a wild mustang for a national competition called “Extreme Mustang Makeover.” Is she ready?

Saunya Bolton is just a couple of days out from leaving for Ft. Worth Texas with her horse Il Divo. At this point he looks like just about any other horse. He's calm. He listens to Saunya and moves well around the arena. This is what most of us expect from a horse.

But remember how Il Divo was in June, wild, just off the range and scared to death.
Even then, Saunya says she knew in her heart they both would be fine.

“They want to trust you right off the bat. You can see it in their eyes. But, you have to build that trust. Once you've got that trust there just isn't anything they won't do,” says Saunya.

They are both past the fear and the unknown. For the past couple of weeks Saunya has focused Il Divo's attention to obstacles that she may ask him to go through if they make it to the finals.

Dragging things, stepping on tarps, and plastic bottles, things Il Divo will be asked to do on the trail by whoever buys him. And when asked, he'll gladly follow through. Even photographer Scott Walker and his camera don't seem to phase him.

But Saunya has more to show us, his trailer loading. In the past he stood at the trailer door and pawed, unsure about getting in. That’s no longer an issue.

And then Saunya has a real surprise for us.

“It is by far his favorite thing,” says Saunya.

This is only the second time the horse has been asked to work cows. Many times horses are scared to do so and it takes time to teach them the skill. She says she still wishes she had more time, and we suspect its not just about training. As you can imagine, she's grown quite attached to the four year old gelding and soon it will be time to give him up.

“It’s hard, he's a great horse. He's way exceeded my expectations. Mentally, he's just bonded to me. It’s going to be hard to let him go,” says Saunya

Saunya leaves Saturday for Ft. Worth Texas. The Extreme Mustang Makeover begins on Friday September 18th. Il Divo will be auctioned off on Sunday the 20th.
