Washoe Officials Take Survey on School Calendar

The Washoe County School District plans to survey parents, students and teachers on whether the school year should start and end two weeks earlier.

Under the proposal, the academic year would begin in early August and end in early May. Currently, classes begin the week before Labor Day and end in early June.

Backers of the proposal say the shift would allow students to take first semester exams in December before the long vacation over Christmas and New Years.

Critics argue it would interfere with teachers being able to take summer classes of their own at the University of Nevada, Reno or local community colleges.

District spokesman Steve Mulvenon said the proposal could be presented to trustees this spring.

If approved, it would take effect in 2006.
