Some residents of an upscale southwest Reno area are angry about rising assessed property values and want to do something about it.
Larry Winkler and his wife, Jeannie Cassinelli plan to send notices on how to appeal Washoe County assessed property values to 1,600 homeowners in Caughlin Ranch, Juniper Hills and Juniper Terraces.
They're taking the action after their property assessments increased 67 percent this year.
"It's getting to the point where you have a second mortgage on your house for life - your tax bill," Winkler said. "What needs to happen is the tax law has to change."
Deputy District Attorney Blaine Cartlidge said the assessor's office is unfairly being made a scapegoat for complaints over rising property values.
The complaints "reveal nothing but frustration with a very complex tax system and rising property values, neither of which the assessor controls," Cartlidge said.
More than 800 property owners at nearby Incline Village on Lake Tahoe's north shore have filed property value appeals with the county.
The Village League to Save Incline Assets has filed a class-action lawsuit against the assessor over the matter.
