Ensign on Secret Trip to Iraq

Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., was overseas Wednesday on an official trip that will include a stop in Iraq, his spokesman Jack Finn said.

"He's overseas now," Finn said Wednesday afternoon from Washington D.C. "It includes a stop in Iraq but I can't say anything else about it for security reasons."

Ensign, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, had been scheduled to appear in Las Vegas Wednesday at a joint government-small business procurement conference but had to cancel.

The senator left on the trip Tuesday but Finn said he could not say from where. He said Ensign would hold a news conference in Las Vegas upon his return, but declined to say when that would be.

Finn said Ensign's office had not publicized the trip. He disclosed the trip Wednesday in responding to a request from The Associated Press for Ensign's comment for a news story.
