A rapist is on the loose, as police search for evidence to help find him. The man they're hunting for is responsible for forcing himself upon a woman in a dark alley on Fourth Street. Police have few clues about who he is.

The rape happened under the Wells Avenue overpass near Fourth Street. Police say the woman, who was in her forties, was walking along Fourth street at about ten-thirty Wednesday night. She was headed from her home on East Second Street, to the Alturas Bar where her friends were waiting. Police say out of nowhere, she was attacked.

Ray's Tires owner, Neil Forsythe, captured surveillance video of the Fourth Street corner where the attack took place. You can see two figures, one approaching, then another with their arms up in the air. Its tough to tell if it is the woman and her attacker, but its just about all police have to go on. Forsythe says his camera system has solved crimes before.

"It's solved a guy who broke in and stole the safe out of here. Caught him. Caught a guy stealing wrenches over the fence. Actually two guys. So it's paid off," he said.

Police say the rapist approached the woman and threatened her with a knife, and then dragged her into this alley behind a weekly motel. She says he raped her, and then took off headed East on Fourth Street. It all happened so quickly, that she barely got a look at him.

"She was scared and didn't look. She had her eyes closed. At one point, she looked up and saw a man with blonde hair, but no other details," said Lieutenant Mike Whan with the Reno Police Department.

The woman told police several cars drove by, but no one stopped to help. When the assault was over, she visited a local hospital, but it's unknown if any useable evidence was collected. Police say they're looking for any clues that can help.

"Someone had to have driven by and if they saw it or not, we'd appreciate a phone call," pleaded Whan.

With the rapist still out there, women walking alone, like 49-year-old Marie Pope say, they're keeping a close eye on their surroundings.

"Really, its just scary, but look at the environment, drugs, prostitution. Me myself, I wouldn't be over here at night," said Pope.

We asked police why the woman was walking alone at night on Fourth Street. They say she was not a prostitute or a drug addict, and in fact, she has no criminal record. Police say the woman was not scared of the Fourth Street area, and that all of her transportation is done on foot through the downtown corridor. They say she's a Reno native who only moved back to this area a few months ago.

There is a Secret Witness reward in this case. $2,000 dollars is on the table for anyone with information leading to an arrest. Police say if you have any details, clothing, age, or a description of the rapist, you should call Secret Witness at 322-4900.
