Federal agents raided the San Francisco headquarters of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang early today.
They staged similar raids around the Bay Area and in several other Western states, including the "clubhouse" in Sparks on Sullivan Way.
Marti McKee is the spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in San Francisco. She refused to say what agents were looking for. She said the search and arrest warrants were issued as the result of a two-year investigation.
McKee said 29 search warrants and 24 arrest warrants were issued for Northern California in locations that included Richmond, San Jose and Santa Cruz County.
Additional warrants were executed in Southern California, Arizona, Washington state, Nevada, and Alaska.
McKee said she believes the Northern California warrants resulted in 16 or 17 arrests.
Documents relating to the investigation are currently sealed under court order.
