Saunya Bolton is no stranger to many of us. A Lemmon Valley resident she has trained horses in one way or another most of her adult life. But a chance to train a wild mustang right off the range changed her life.
Most people remember Saunya Bolton from the Western States Mustang Challenge astride her mustang Diva. With tears in her eyes she listened as the mare was being auctioned off to the highest bidder.
“I was just so attached to her, through the process. You take something from the wild and bring it along like that. It was hard to let go," says Saunya.
She admits she couldn't have trained Diva in the 90-days allotted by the challenge without the help and support of her friends and family who stood beside her on that night. Would she ever do it again?
“It was very rewarding, and I gave it a thought for about 2 minutes and said, ok I'll do it.” says Saunya.
In one hundred days, Saunya will be headed to Forth Worth Texas for the Extreme Mustang Makeover. Saunya has been selected as one of a hundred riders from across the country, to train a wild mustang and show the horse in front of a crowd of thousands.
Saunya's journey would begin at Palomino Valley where wild horses gathered off the range are held and hopefully adopted out here by the Bureau of Land Management. In one holding pin Saunya looks over half a dozen wild horses. The horse that would go home with Saunya would be the one who entered the alley way first.
The four year old bay gelding is from the Elko area and his reactions of snorting, pacing back and forth, sweating, and pawing are not uncommon as he's never been touched and has the instinct to flee.
“He's pretty don't you think?” asks Saunya.
Getting a halter put around his head, would take about 20-minutes.
Mustang 4518 is loaded into a trailer, and off to Saunya's house. A tuft of mane will be the only thing he leaves behind.
“Gather girls, “Saunya says to her friends who came to show support, “I want to get a picture of those scared looks on your faces.”
The look on Saunya's twin sister Sheila's face says it all. Arms crossed, big eyes, and jaw dropped, you can almost hear her say, “What have you gotten us in to?”
