RENO - A mare whose brand was cut off before she was let to roam loose is safe in a new home.

Previously, we told you about this mare who was found wandering in Nye County, about 235 miles southeast of Reno. The owner apparently had cut the hide off to make sure she couldn't be identified. A six-by-eight-inch patch of skin was removed from her left hip, and then the horse was left to roam on its own. She's now in a horse sanctuary in San Diego.

The Humane Society says horse abandonment is getting more and more common in the west. But one brand commissioner says this brand removal is, quote, "as cruel as it gets."

The Humane Society and the ASPCA are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

If you can help in the investigation, call the Nevada Department of Agriculture at 775-738-8076.

That person could be charged with animal cruelty and/or altering a brand, which is a felony in Nevada.

Maybe they can find the person who did this by searching registered horse records. Who registered this type of mare, its age and color? Which owner is missing the horse? I hope this mare will be okay.

Are they looking for a per5manent home for the mare? If she can be riddeen for pleasure trail riding I would be interested in giving her a good home.
