In 1982, Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister she would do something to fight breast cancer. Now, that sister's name is the name of the largest breast cancer charity in the world: Susan G. Komen. Today, for the first time in its twelve-year history, the Northern Nevada affiliate has a permanent home. While there we met some amazing women fighting the breast cancer battle.

Lucy McGuire, President of the Susan G. Komen Northern Nevada Affiliate explains why she was inspired to join the cause. “I have many friends and family that have had breast cancer.”

One out of eight women will hear the words "you have breast cancer" in her lifetime. Rhonda Walker is one of them. “My nipple was inverted so I knew it was bad and I could feel it, it was quite large.”

Rhonda had a masectomy in January and chemotherapy just seventeen days ago. “I can’t wait to get my hair back!”

Thursday evening, Susan G. Komen found a new home in Northern Nevada, and so did Rhonda. “This is going to be a great resource for me.”

Not only does the foundation provide emotional support, but financial assistance as well.

“We raise money to grant it out for mammograms and financial assistance and education,” says Sally Deliekau, a breast cancer survivor who helped start the Northern Nevada affiliate.

Some of that grant money goes to Nevada Health Centers, which has a Mammovan that provides free mammograms to those who can’t afford it. Doctors say regular exams are critical for early detection.

Rhonda suggests, “Monthly self breast exams and yearly mammograms…I'm a perfect example of someone who didn't do breast exams.”

To find out more information about the Mammovan, call (877) 581-6266.
