RENO - The city of Reno is closer to avoiding layoffs over the next fiscal year.
Employees of Local 39 have voted to forgo the cost-of-living raises scheduled for the upcoming fiscal year.
Local 39 represents more than 500 city employees, including engineers and clerical staff.
Because of dropping city revenues, union layoffs would have been inevitable if the roughly 2-percent scheduled raises would have taken effect.
The only bargaining unit that hasn't voted on foregoing raises is the local 731 firefighters. That vote is set for the end of this month.
