SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - Sparks police have arrested three people in
connection with the kidnapping and rape of a 32-year-old Reno woman
they say was handcuffed, beaten and sexually assaulted by an
ex-boyfriend over a period of nearly 20 hours.
The lead suspect, Scott Casteel, also is accused of threatening the victim with a handgun if she talked about the assaults at his Sparks home on Sunday. The 40-year-old Casteel was arrested on Tuesday when he tried to flee a SWAT team on a motorcycle.
Police announced Thursday they also have arrested two women they
say were accessories to the crime - Amanda Branson, 25, Reno, and
Rebecah Carrara, 28, Sparks.
Authorities are seeking a fourth suspect accused of assisting in the kidnapping - Joel Haddock, 24, Carson City.
Sparks police Sgt. John Franz said Haddock was a mutual friend of the victim and Casteel whom she had asked to give her a ride to go shopping. Instead, he said Haddock allegedly drove her to Casteel's home where he was waiting for her.
"She had avoided (Casteel) due to fearing him," Franz said. "If she was aware she was going to Casteel's residence she would have never gotten into the vehicle."
Branson was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of destruction of
evidence and being an accessory to a felony.
Carrara was arrested on suspicion of destruction or concealment of evidence, being an accessory to a felony, being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.
The victim eventually talked Casteel into setting her free and she talked to police later on Monday, police said. Investigators said she had injuries consistent with being handcuffed, beaten and sexually assaulted.
