RENO, Nev. (AP) - Forest Service officials have been forced to drain a small lake overlooking Lake Tahoe that they acquired in a land deal last summer because of concerns about the safety of a dam.
Incline Lake near the summit of Mount Rose southwest of Reno was
once the playground of some of Nevada's wealthiest residents.
The Forest Service bought the property last July for $46 million. But experts since have decided a dam on the lake built in 1942 is unstable and could fail in the case of an earthquake.
Service spokesman Rex Norman says the property remains open but
it's just a sandy stretch of dry land studded with shallow pools. He says it likely will take a year or more to come up with a restoration plan.
