Registrar Office Cuts Could Affect Elections
Reno
Its typically a slow time at the county offices on 9th Street, at the elections department you can hear a pin drop.

A small bell attached to the door alerts staff they have a customer. In this case it’s a first time customer, an 18 year old who wants to register to vote.

County cutbacks have meant the office is currently staffed with four people including the registrar himself. And yes they do have work to do even this time of year.

“This is the time we gather data get information together to prepare for the next cycle,” says Lydia Van Diest, Senior Deputy with the Registrar of Voters Office.

But these days Van Diest has less help than in the past. Three positions have been cut, a result of early retirement where the employees had 70-years of experience among them. That might not be such a big deal now.

But just eight months ago, you might remember just how swamped this office was. During the Presidential Election Nevada was predicted to be a battle ground state, with it coming down to Washoe County. Recent budget cuts means less staff to work in a pressure cooker environment, land it won't stop there. There could be fewer polling places and workers once you get there to cast your ballot

“And it’s very difficult. It takes a long, long learning curve to learn all aspect of how to do an election. I always say elections are like walking a tight rope. You get one chance to do it and its Election Day,” says Dan Burke, Washoe County Registrar of Voters.

To almost add insult to injury this year lawmakers moved up Nevada's primary to June. That means the staff here has to come up with a plan of action to register voters and candidates, figure out polling places and early voting locations by December.

Last year Nevada had a presidential caucus in February, a high early voter turnout, and a 78-percent voter turnout on Election Day. The former workers were an integral part of that entire process. The workers remaining say they'll just have to get out more with less.
