More 1.6 million people registered to win tickets to Michael Jackson’s memorial at Staple’s Center in Los Angeles. Only 17, 500 were lucky enough to get one of the coveted tickets. One of them lives right here in Reno.

Erin Tepe said she never expected to win when she filled out an online request Friday. She hoped if she was chosen she’d be able to drive to Los Angeles. Sunday she got the notice and a shocking surprise, she would have to print the email notifying her of the win and drive to Dodgers Stadium just to claim the ticket. Finding the ticketing process to be more than she bargained for she decided to give them away. “Everybody was telling me to sell them, even my mom,” said Tepe, “but I just didn't think it was right to profit off of somebody's death.”

Instead she turned to Craigslist. She placed a post announcing the first person to respond could have the tickets for free. The tickets were claimed in minutes, but Tepe said she was shocked to see how many people were willing to pay for them. “I probably got 100 people offering $500, $800… a lot of money,” she said, “but I gave them to somebody in Orange County.” In fact demand for the tickets is so high, bidding wars continued throughout the day on sites like Craigslist and eBay. Bids ranged from $1 to an unbelievable $2,000,000.
