RENO, Nev. (AP) - Health officials in Washoe County trying to curb the risk of West Nile virus are looking for mosquito breeding grounds in an unusual place: foreclosed homes.
The Washoe District Healthy Department says homeowners can leave
behind unattended swimming pools, hot tubs, bird baths and other
water features that attract mosquitoes.
Jeff Jeppson, an intern for the health department, is using for-sale listings of foreclosed homes to find swimming pools and other fixtures where there might be stagnant water.
So far, he's checked about 40 pools and found about a dozen that
needed chemical treatment for mosquitoes.
