Imagine taking information from officers on the street, detectives investigating a case, and information of law enforcement outside of the area, and combining it or “fusing” it, to come up with a plan of attack against crime.

The information can come from anywhere, but ultimately it will end up being easy to understand for those who need it most to fight crime. Analyzed and compiled and put in context like a chart which shows crime activity in the area. Another chart makes connections between a suspect, a car theft, and another known suspect.

“There were certain commonalities that were occurring in burglaries that began somewhere out in Winnemucca and continued through the I-80 corridor all the way to Yuba City, California. In the end there was a specific group that was responsible for committing at least 20 burglaries we know of," says Captain of the Speical Operations Divisoon Tim Kuzanek.

Capt. Kuzanek says the facility has been up and running for about a year and a half now. Computers allow analyst to try and spot patterns, connections or increased criminal activity and spread the word to those who need to know. Plans of actions can be drawn up to combat the problem or stop it from ever occurring.

“What one agency may have have done to resolve the problem in another area may work here,” says the Captain

Kuzanek says the center will work with major facilities, like the power company to devise a strategic plan should someone threaten or worse sabotage. The center is used for other purposes as well. Last year the secretary of states office used the center to monitor activity at polling places locally and across the country. Should a major wild fire break out this season, this center can provide fire fighters will invaluable information as well.

“To advise them that there are specific sites in the fire's path that are should be known by emergency crews that are responding out there,” say Captain Kuzanek.

The center has a fiscal aspect to it as well. The information gathered can help law enforcement plan and anticipate what resources might be needed for certain planned or unplanned events.

Instead of needing 500-law enforcement personnel, intelligence based policing may indicate only half as many officers will be needed, or visa versa.

There are a total of 3 fusion centers here in Nevada. The other two are located in Las Vegas, and Carson City.
