LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 33-year-old Clark County man infected with the swine flu virus died Sunday, Southern Nevada health officials said.
The man had no underlying heath conditions and had been hospitalized since June 15, officials with The Southern Nevada Health District said Monday.
"We've always expected that we would see patients with more severe illness, and even death," said Dr. Lawrence Sands, chief health officer for the district.
Sands would not identify the man, citing privacy concerns.
He said he did not know where the man lived, worked or whether he recently traveled anywhere. Sands said he did not believe any of the man's family members had tested positive for the swine flu virus, also known as H1N1.
The death would not change or heighten recommended precautions, as health officials did not know exactly how the man contracted the virus.
"That's something we're probably never really going to know," Sands said. "This virus is everywhere in the community."
The death is the second in Nevada and the first of a state resident related to the virus. Earlier this month, a 70-year-old woman from New York state died in Nevada, as officials diagnosed her with the illness after she arrived in Las Vegas.
Health officials have confirmed 80 swine flu cases in Clark County, with a majority of people experiencing mild illness.
The Nevada State health Division said in its weekly report on Friday said there were 240 confirmed cases of swine flu statewide. Most of the cases, 134, have been in Washoe County in northern Nevada.
"The virus here has been relatively mild in our community," Sands said.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 70 countries have had confirmed cases of the virus. In the United States, nearly 28,000 had contracted the virus and 127 had died as of Friday, according to the latest figures available from the CDC.
