Reno police say they want to shift their approach to fighting drug activity by more than tripling the size of a unit focusing on street-level narcotics crimes.
At the same time, police want to streamline a regional team that pursues higher-level offenders.
Police Assistant Chief Jim Weston said the existing system isn't meeting the department's needs in fighting street drug crime.
About 80 percent of crime facing Reno alone originates from the downtown and northeast Reno, he said.
"When we really hit downtown, the drug pushers leave," Weston said. "We need more resources so we can be at it all the time. You just can't be there for a little bit and then leave."
The proposal has been presented to other agencies and could be implemented as soon as January, Weston said.
