One of the largest crowds in Mackay Stadium history is expected Saturday night when the annual Battle for the Fremont Cannon takes place.
A sellout crowd in excess of 31,000 will witness the Nevada-UNLV football game, which kicks off at 7:05 p.m., if all remaining tickets are sold.
"As of 4:00 p.m. today, I am told we have 2,500 tickets remaining for sale game day. We are encouraging fans to come early to get tickets, if they don't have them already, to alleviate long lines and risk not getting into the stadium for the start of the game," Nevada Athletics Director Chris Ault said.
"We've expanded our ticket office hours both at the stadium and Lawlor on game day to ease the crunch for this game."
The 12th-largest crowd in Mackay history (25,256), came out for Nevada's season opener August 30, a 24-23 victory over Southern Utah, and the first game under the lights at the current Mackay, which opened in 1966.
The last time 30,000 or more attended a Nevada game was the Oregon game September 13, 1997, when 30,420 attended for the second-largest crowd in school history.
The UNLV game that year drew 30,118, third on the all-time attendance list. The Mackay Stadium record is 33,391 for the October 28, 1995 UNLV game, when standing room only tickets were sold. It is the only sellout in the history of the school.
Stadium capacity is listed at 31,545 but with skybox lease holders now being required to buy tickets for those boxes for the first time this year, Mackay's total seating capacity is now 31,900.
The Lawlor Events Center Ticket Office will have extended hours Saturday, selling tickets from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The ticket booths at Mackay will open one hour earlier than usual game day, opening at 4 p.m., and gates to the stadium will open 30 minutes earlier, with fans able to enter Mackay at 5 p.m. Tickets are also being sold online by going to www.tickets.com
Will call tickets may be picked up beginning at 4 p.m. at the south ticket booth (main entrance) only.
UNLV won last year's game in Las Vegas, 21-17. Nevada's last victory in the series came in 1999 at Mackay Stadium, a 26-12 decision.
