Sierra Storm

Motorists who have to cross the Sierra will have to chain up for a second straight day.

A storm that didn't drop a large amount of snow left enough behind that chains are mandatory on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit from Boca to Rainbow and on U-S 50 over Echo Summit from four miles east of the junction with California 89 to Kyburz.

Chains or snow tires are required elsewhere throughout the Tahoe
Basin.

The storm also has slowed driving in the eastern part of the state. Chains or snow tires are required on the higher passes along I-80, U-S 50, U-S 6 and the state highways in those areas.

Isolated snow showers will taper off today and will be followed by clearing that will let temperatures plunge into the low teens or single digits throughout the Sierra and northern Nevada.
