Nevada's jobless rate dropped slightly from 5.4 percent in July to 5.2 percent in August, and Gov. Kenny Guinn said Friday the dip indicates the state's economy is "picking up speed."

"The rate of job growth has improved in each of the last three months since stalling during the Iraq war," Guinn added.

The jobless report from the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation shows the number of out-of-work Nevadans decreased by about 5,200 to 55,700 between July and August. The number of people working in August totaled nearly 1.1 million.

DETR chief Myla Florence said the state's August jobless rate compares with a national rate of 6.1 percent and a 6.6 percent rate in neighboring California.

In Las Vegas, the unadjusted jobless rate in August was 5.3 percent, down from 5.7 percent in July. Of the statewide total of jobless people, about 46,400 were in the Las Vegas area and other towns and cities in Clark County. Also included in the area are Nye County, Nev., and Mohave County, Ariz.

In the Reno area, the unadjusted rate dropped from 4.2 percent to 3.9 percent from month to month. The jobless total there was 7,700.

In the Carson City and Douglas-Lyon-Storey counties area, the unadjusted rate for August was 5.2 percent, down from 5.7 percent in July, with 3,240 jobless.

The Elko-Eureka counties area had a 4.5 percent rate, down from 4.8 percent in July, with 990 jobless.

Statewide, between July and August, the casino-related leisure and hospitality industry added 1,100 employees, construction added 2,600 workers, and transportation-utilities added 200 workers.

Government hiring increased 400, retail trade added 1,600 workers, manufacturing added 200, mining dropped 100; and finance-insurance-real estate added 500 between July and August.

Over the year, total employment in all industries increased by about 21,900 jobs. The total includes people who hold more than one job.
