Crime in Washoe County Neighborhoods
Reno
When you think of law enforcement you probably think of their primary goal of "catching the bad guys" But, where are the bad guys? What crimes are they committing? That’s where strategic plans come into play, and where the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office continually updates its plan of action every week.

Its called ACES.
It stands for Area Crime Evaluation System. Each Wednesday afternoon representatives from various departments get together and discuss what crimes they are seeing, how those crimes compare to previous weeks and months, and what they plan on doing about the trends they are seeing.

The meeting can be a couple of hours long.
That's because they don't just deal with crime, but also budgets and operations. Captains representing various districts and divisions present a weekly report on what's happening in their jurisdictions.

“The 395 homicide we are just cleaning up some loose ends,” said Capt. Dave Nikoley from the detective division.

Sheriff Mike Haley often asks questions to get a better understanding of crime statistics and strategy.

“NHP assist, we had 60-pounds of Dimethal Sulfinate. I'd have to defer to Tim because I have no idea what that stuff is but its not something that is good. Ah, I think it was sir. We wouldn't do it otherwise,” reported Capt. John Spencer from the north patrol district.

Trends we noticed: Patrols will be stepped up in the Mayberry Park area because of vehicle burglaries. But it appears as if Incline Village is the hot spot for the week, 16 burglaries have been reported there in the last 91-days, 4 in just the last week. 3 of the vehicles were unlocked and, according to reports, that's the case with most of the cars that are broken in to. Statistics show those burglaries are happening between 10:00pm and 1am, Thursday and Friday in the morning, Sunday night, and Monday morning. For those who collect the information all of this is pertinent when fighting crime.

“Rather than going from report to report, crime to crime, call to call, we look at the data and try to figure out where we should deploy resources best,” says Sgt. Eric Spratley who is in charge of assembling the information given out every Wednesday.

Last week the Sheriff’s Office and the NHP stepped up road patrols in Sun Valley, today at the meeting, Lieutenant Jerry Baldridge announced 217 citations were handed out last week.
Also in Sun Valley, the Sheriff's Department is reporting that counterfeit money is being passed around in the community. Someone is altering five-dollar bills into one hundred-dollar bills.

Officers at the ACES meeting also discussed the foreclosure rate here in Washoe County. Data show is down 18% and so far only 3 of those homes have been broken in to. Teenagers broke into one foreclosed home said Deputy John Cryer.
