The Reno Police Department is weighing the cost of accepting a federal grant to hire six new officers.

The department has been awarded a $450,000 from the federal Community Oriented Policing Services Universal Hiring Program for the salary and benefits of each new officer for three years.

But Assistant Police Chief Jim Weston said the grant only covers about a third of the total cost for each position. The total cost of hiring a new officer for one year is about $75,000, he said.

"There's a lot of money needed beyond what the government allocated," Weston said.

The department was able to get city money the past two years to use the federal grants for six officers but has rejected similar grants in other years when unable to find the money, Weston said.

"It's a bit early to know how it will pan out this time," Weston said.
