Woman Killed, Driver Arrested in Reno Accident

A Reno woman was killed and the driver of the car she was in arrested Sunday in a fatal crash through a fence and into the backyard of a west Reno residence.

The name of the 24-year-old victim had not been released pending notification of family, Reno police said.

The driver, Michael William Varner, 23, Reno, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing death and reckless driving causing death.

Witnesses said he was driving a 1994 white Nissan sedan at a high rate of speed on Mayberry Drive when he failed to negotiate a curve about 2:15 a.m. Sunday.

The car left the road near the intersection of Hunter Lake road, drove over a 2-foot retaining wall, through a wood fence and a chain-link fence into the backyard of a home at 1355 Charles Drive, police said.

The woman was struck by a fence post that came through the windshield, police said. She was taken to Washoe Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries.
