About $4.6 million in federal funds soon will be on its way to Nevada for various environmental and community projects, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced.
Included are $350,000 for construction of the city of Reno's homeless resource center, $1 million for treatment of arsenic contamination at the Virgin Valley's water facilities and $300,000 for efforts to save Walker Lake near Hawthorne.
Also included are $1 million for the Reno-based Desert Research Institute to help clean water in western Nevada and $1 million for Washoe County to conduct the North Lemmon Valley artificial recharge project.
The programs are included in the fiscal 2004 federal budget.
Reid said $100,000 will go to Hawthorne for water and sewer improvements and $325,000 to the Shoshone-Paiute Tribe for environmental assessment of acid mine drainage on the Owyhee River.
