Douglas County commissioners overrode the recommended denial by the county's planning commission and approved an upscale, 384-unit housing development in Clear Creek.
The proposed Clear Creek Ranch & Golf Club, a gated community encompassing an 18-hole golf course, has been in the works for more than two years.
The county's planning staff endorsed the development plans from property owner John Serpa of Carson City. He and his representatives said the county would benefit from increased taxes and new infrastructure, including a water and sewer system and an intersection with U.S. 50.
After a 3 1/2-hour hearing in a packed room Thursday, commissioners said the decision became how area residents will benefit from a major condition on the project that would preserve agricultural open space in Carson Valley.
