Motocross enthusiasts will be have two new options to play in the dirt.

The Washoe County Board of Adjustment on Thursday approved permits for a youth dirt-bike course at the Jackling rock quarry near Sun Valley and a commercial course east of Sparks.

Motorcycle riders for decades have used the Seventh Street pits, but that is being bulldozed to make way for homes. And responding to increasing complaints from residents, county officials passed a law making off-road riding illegal within 500 feet of homes.

Officials said the new courses are located in canyons and at least a mile from the nearest home.

The youth course will be operated by volunteers.

Plans for the Mustang Sports Park east of Sparks call for separate adult and youth tracks, a 2 1/2-mile off-road course and a future site for street motorcycle training courses.
