A South Lake Tahoe teen struck by a suspected drunken driver while on her way to a school bus stop has died of her injuries.
Marissa Bassett, 15, died Tuesday afternoon at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, hours after being struck while walking to catch the bus on the first day of school, police said.
Bassett was to begin her freshman year at South Lake Tahoe High School.
The driver of the car, Jesse Whitworth, was arrested on a felony drunken driving charge following the 7 a.m. accident, police said.
Authorities said after Bassett's death, Whitworth, 21, was also charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Whitworth remained in the El Dorado County Jail on $150,000 bail.
