Gov. Kenny Guinn has accepted a $5.3 million check from the federal government to help Nevada children learn English as a second language.

Deputy Under Secretary of Education Maria Hernandez presented Guinn the check at a state school superintendents'meeting in Reno last week.

"Learning English and succeeding in other academic subjects is the key to remaining in school and getting a high school diploma," Guinn said.

The grant was awarded under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

More than 5 million children in the United States speak about 400 languages other than English as their first language. About 80 percent of these children speak Spanish.

Nineteen states have reported an increase of 50 to 200 percent in English language learners over the last three years.
