Homeowners Won't Be Charged for Shooting Intruder

No charges will be filed against a Gardnerville homeowner who fatally shot an intruder at his home.

The Douglas County district attorney's office said on Thursday the shooting was justifiable and excusable.

Walter Hetrick, 40, of Antioch, Calif., was shot by Charles Cryderman, 52, when he broke into Cryderman's home Aug. 2.

The decision by Chief Criminal Deputy District Attorney Kris Brown to exonerate Cryderman comes less than a week after a sheriff's investigator concluded that Cryderman was defending his home and family when he shot Hetrick.

Hetrick was a convicted murderer who spent about 10 years in California mental hospitals. He was declared legally insane at one point and was arrested on drug charges as recently as January.
