Washoe Considers Flood Control Options

Washoe County commissioners are weighing possible funding plans to proceed with flood control projects on the Truckee River.

Officials say the 800 million dollar project is 300 million dollars short in funding.

Some options include a service charge tacked onto property tax bills and a quarter-cent sales tax increase that would need voter approval.

Officials have been working on a comprehensive flood control plan since 1997, when the Truckee River flooded after torrential rains on New Year's.

The US Army Corps of Engineers estimated damage at 450 million dollars, but local officials say damage totaled 680 million dollars when lost business is factored in.
