GARDEN GROVE, California (AP) - An Amber Alert was issued Tuesday night after a 29-year-old man abducted his two young daughters and threatened to kill them, police said.
Luis Javier Arteaga was believed to be heading out of state with
his daughters after taking them from their mother's home Sunday afternoon in Garden Grove, about 25 miles south of Los Angeles,
said Detective Bob Bogue of the Garden Grove Police Department.
Arteaga was believed to be driving a 1989 Mazda MPV with a
license plate 2LTX307.
The girls are Hilary Arteaga, 5, and Zillalit Arteaga, 3. Hilary
is described as 3-feet-6-inches tall, weighing 45 pounds, with
black hair and brown eyes. Zillailait is 3 feet tall, 35 pounds,
with black hair and brown eyes.
Police said the girl's mother, Arteaga's former girlfriend,
reported them missing to authorities Sunday night.
No alert was issued until Monday night, however, after police
said Arteaga contacted the mother and threatened to kill the
children. Bogue said he told the mother he was angry because she had reported the girls' abduction.
The Amber Alert was issued for all of California and carried by media in Northern Nevada early Wednesday morning.
