Douglas County Planning Denies Development

The Douglas County planning commission recommended denial of a 1,576-acre development in the scenic Sierra foothills just south of Carson City, despite a ringing endorsement of the plan by business groups.

Residents packed the meeting to voice strong opposition to the Clear Creek project. Tuesday's meeting got contentious at times as emotions ran high.

Randal Jackson, president of The Planning Center of Costa Mesa, Calif., insisted the project is environmentally sensitive and includes benefits to the county.

The project would include 366 single-family lots, 18 time-share units, an 18-hole golf course, a U.S. 50 underpass with access to the site and a connection with the county's sewer and water system.

"The benefits to the community are enormous,"Jackson said."It is a well-thought-out project."

The Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce&Visitors Authority and Douglas County Business Council endorsed the development.

But residents and the Washoe Tribe voiced opposition, saying the development would lead to increased density and traffic.

"Douglas County voters do not want more homes to be built in this area,"said Stephanie Hague of Gardnerville."This is a slick presentation from another outsider, who is not even a Nevadan."

The commission rejected the plan on a 6-1 vote, with Larry Walsh the lone dissenter.

Former county Commissioner Don Miner, who lost his seat in the last general election, is a partner in the project.

"It is important to note there will be development"in the Clear Creek area, he said."It is a question of the higher and better use."

The project has been turned down several times since it surfaced more than two years ago.

County commissioners are set to take final action Sept. 4.
