Nevada Gas Holds Steady While Nation Soars

The cost of gasoline held fairly steady across Nevada over the past month, but was far above the U.S. average, even with a 5-cent increase nationally, AAA Nevada said Wednesday.

It said the statewide mean of $1.70 was unchanged from last month. Nationally, the median was $1.57, with 4 cents of the nickel bump coming this week.

AAA Nevada spokeswoman Lisa Foster said low inventories and heavy summer driving have contributed to the national hike.

"So far this summer Nevada motorists have experienced a very stable gas market, but issues pushing up the price nationally may have the same impact here,"she said.

Across Nevada, prices held about even except in Elko, where an 11-cent drop from a month ago put the price at $1.68.

The most expensive gas was in Sparks at $1.76 for a gallon of regular unleaded, up 2 cents from the July survey.

Prices in Reno and Carson City were close behind at $1.75. That was down 4 cents in Reno and unchanged in Carson.

Las Vegas gas was going for $1.66, up 2 cents.

Its spot as cheapest in the state could be affected by Friday's shutdown of a pipeline in Arizona which has caused spot shortages and price spikes of up to 10 cents a gallon at some Phoenix stations.

"There does not seem to be an impact on Nevada, but if not resolved soon, the result could be a decrease in supply in Nevada,"Foster said.
