Residents of a Stead neighborhood are on alert tonight for a prowler who has harrassed several women in the past couple weeks.

Reno police issued a warning today about the 'peeping Tom'

This afternoon police sent out a recorded message to the homes in this Stead neighborhood to warn of the prowler.

They say he could be more dangerous than the average peeping Tom.

In the past two weeks, police have responded to four reports of a man lurking near homes along Peppermint Drive and Silver Lake Road in Stead.

Detectives say he looks into windows and makes lewd comments.

So far, the prowler has targeted women.

Says Lynn Johnson of Stead: "It does scare me and I'm certainly going to be more careful."

Johnson says she's always felt safe in her neighborhood, but the idea of someone sneaking around her home has changed her habits.

"I'll go jogging with my dogs. I would certainly call if I see anything suspicious," she says.

Her husband says the neighbors have a small watch group but he plans to patrol his mother's home nearby.

"She's by herself - she's a sound sleeper and sometimes forgets to lock her doors," says Mark Johnson. "It makes me nervous and I'll be on extra alert."

Detectives are warning the prowler could be physically violent.

In one report a woman says he reached through her window and grabbed her face.

"One of our main concerns is going from peeping Tom to attacking people," says Lt. Ron Holladay. "We want everyone to take extra security measures."

Detectives say people should always keep their garages, doors, and windows locked, and remember to close their blinds.

Police say they have some clues the prowler could be a local resident, and they're counting on residents to report anything suspicious.

Police describe the suspect as a white man in his late 20's or early 30's.

They say he's 5 foot 8 to 6 feet tall, with a thin build. He may have a mustache and has been seen with a baseball cap on backwards.

Investigators say the prowler has been most active during the morning and evening hours, so they ask people to be especially vigilant during those times.
