A stabbing during a fight near this remote Washoe County community left one man dead and another man in jail on suspicion of murder, authorities said Saturday.

Washoe County sheriff's Sgt. David Nikoley said Christopher Johnson, 29, of Kenosha, Wis., was arrested Friday night - several hours after the body of a 63-year-old acquaintance was found along Nevada Route 447 about 35 miles north of Gerlach.

Acting on several tips, investigators found Johnson on nearby Nevada Route 34 about 25 miles north of Gerlach and arrested him. He was taken to the county jail in Reno, where he's being held on no bail.

Gerlach is located on the southern tip of the sprawling Black Rock Desert about 100 miles north of Reno.

An autopsy performed Saturday by the county coroner's office confirmed the victim died of multiple stab wounds. His name was withheld pending notification of family members.

Nikoley described the suspect and victim as"casual friends"who had known each other a short time after meeting in Nevada. They were on their way to the Pacific Northwest.

"We're still looking into the motive. We're not quite sure what it was,"Nikoley said."It was some altercation but we're not sure what spurred it on."

He declined comment on the weapon used in the stabbing.
