Search and rescue crews were combing the waters of Lake Tahoe early Thursday for a woman missing after a rented ski boat carrying nine people capsized.

One man died and seven others were recovering from various injuries following the accident Wednesday, authorities said.

Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Tom Mezzetta said a hiker near Cave Rock on the lake's southeast shore called 911 about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday when he heard someone yelling for help from the water.

Rescuers found the capsized Correct Craft ski boat several hundred yards off shore. The vessel was a rental from Sunnyside Marina in Tahoe City, Calif., Mezzetta said.

Four people were clinging to the hull when rescuers arrived. Three others were pulled from the water and one was able to swim to shore, authorities said.

The boaters were in the chilly water for about 90 minutes before they were discovered.

One victim, a 53-year-old man from San Carlos, Calif., died later a Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Mezzetta said.

The other seven were reported in stable condition.

Mezzetta said the 50-year-old missing woman was reportedly wearing a life preserver.

Marine units from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Tahoe Douglas Fire Department, South Lake Tahoe police and fire departments and the U.S. Coast Guard resumed the search for the missing woman early Thursday.
