Water wasters in Ely will face stiffer fines under new regulations approved by the City Council and Municipal Utilities Board.
Though Ely has had summer water restrictions on the books for several years, the regulations lacked penalties to enforce them, officials said.
Under the new regulations, fines for wasting water or watering during prohibited times will be $50 for a first offense, $250 for a second offense and $500 for subsequent offenses after that in the same season.
An earlier proposal to cut off water service for a third offense was scrapped over some board members raised concerns about public safety.
The new penalties took effect Aug. 1.
